The bottom one I did with Photoshop, and the top one, I inked the digital sketch traditionally with Speedball ink and a brush. This just goes to prove that I draw MUCH better with traditional materials. The lines make it, I recon! And my digital lines need work. (They're both colored digitally)

I see a few arguments on how digital isn't art, compared to traditional. This goes to prove that digital is just as hard and demands just as much skill from the artist as traditional does.

I just really needed to draw a happy pic today. My gal Karly is coming over on Tuesday, and this is what I'm going to do to her when she gets here. >:D She's my best friend from childhood and conviently shorter than me... Makes it easier to give her these types of hugs.

This is Ishmael and Queequeg from Moby Dick, by the way! In case you can't recognize them in color!! On a technical note, I really botched up 'Queg's tattoos, and I don't think I gave the man enough bulk, either. I'm still getting a grasp of their designs... but, man, are they just so fun to draw! :D

So, I got a chance later today to actually sit down... and so I read some Moby Dick (I'd like to get the book finished before I have to return to my schoolin'). I got the the part where Queequeg saves Toshtego, and then I was stupid and scanned ahead. I didn't read any plot, but I fell on this sentence that said Queequeg lost his hat during a boat-lowering for a group of whales.

Then I had to draw this.

So, I'm working on reading Moby Dick by Herman Melville right now... I'm about half way through. It's hard to put down! I absolutely love Ishmael and Queequeg. They have such a strong and awesome friendship! And they, when together, are mostly always hilarious. Sarcastic humor at it's best!! I can't pick a favorite part... It's all good.

We had to put my goat, Elisa, down yesterday. We knew she had cancer for a few months, but it wasn’t affecting her quality of life, so we just kept an eye on her and tried our best to make her as happy as possible. She was her normal, hyper, happy self on Sunday, but Monday morning she started acting uncomfortable, and by 5 o’clock, we knew it was time.

She was buried by 8:00, and I’m still in a bit of shock.

She was a great goat. She was my 4-H project for a few years before we were both too old to do it. The first day I brought her home, she was scared from being taken away from her mother, so I sang to her and that calmed her down. I took my schoolwork (I was homeschooled) out to the barn everyday for a few weeks. I always did my math with her in my lap.

I held her as the vet put her down, and sang a little song.

Yeah, yeah. She was just an animal. But I don’t care who you are, it’s so sad when a pet dies.

I loved that goat. She was such a sweetheart.

They’re from a Swedish fairy-tale re-telling I’ve been working on “on-off” since my senior year in high school. (first pics of them are on lined paper) Tale’s called “The Princess Who Danced with a Troll Every Night”—long winded title! But it is so rich, even in the simple fairy-tale style it’s written in, and it ends so abruptly! I have a bit written on it already, but part of me is wondering if I should switch to making it into something sequential… That might be fun.

Had to do a self portrait over aperiod of four weeks (the first week was just taking reference photos) and this is what I got! I used black and white charcoal on grey toned paper.

And along with that, on the final week our assignmnet was to choose a reference photo with at least the full head and shoulders and use whichever medium we wanted to make it. I just got back into the Lord of the Rings, and I re-discovered that I really liked the character of Grima Wormtongue, so I popped in my DVD and took a "screen cap" of him and painted it using Acrylics. It was a load of fun!

I found out it was one of my favorite Illustrators/comic book artist, Jeff Smith's birthday today (Feb the 27th)and so I thought it appropriate to post some of the fan art I've been unashamedly doodling in my spare (HA) time.

I think I've said it a few times, but you really have to read BONE. It's one of the most genuine stories you'll get your fists on. And, the art is awesome to boot. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be left wanting a LOT more even though the book has more than 1300 pages.

I have tried and failed to describe it, so you're just going to have to read it for yourself.

Thorn and Fone Bone are my favorite characters---you can't pick one between them. They're too much a part of each other to pick a favorite from the two.

So, I've been listening to Heather Dale songs alot lately. They not only sound nice, but tell stories! Now, I don't know about you, but those sound-good-and-tell-a-story songs are my favorite. They're fun to listen to when you're doing something mindless and boring. Lately, my favorite of her's has been "Hawthorn Tree."

This stinkin' song has reminded me how much I love Arthurian legends. I have this huge hardback of Tennyson's Idylls of the King (illustrated by one of my favorites of all time--Gustave Dore')

I also had to do a quick google search on Merlin and Vivian. I love how different the story get's each time it's told. (My favorite versions are the ones where she imprisons him to save him. And they love eachother unconditionally. I'm a sap that way.)

Fun fact: Sanguine pens make almost anything look remotely nice. Also, I experimented and didn't do a pencil sketch underneath the inks on any of these. I just drew these straight ahead, no planning, reference, or anything. Okay, I looked up Apple Blossoms to make sure I got them right. But that's it.

I almost forgot that Merlin was a crazy old bat living in the woods for a loooong time. Which is awesome---You gotta love those crazy mountain men. Apparently, because of this, he's often associated with Apple tree's in the various legends and literature he shows up in. (Apple Trees=Apple Blossoms??) Man, I love Heather Dale and her ability to actually care enough about these fun old stories to actually put little things like that into her rhymns.

These are head studies for clothed figure drawing. I used my sister as a model for all of them, but the assignmnet only called for ONE likeness drawing... So I really pushed the limits of changing her into something totally not her for the other two. The second one I wasn't very fearless, the third one I just said, "what they hey?" and drew her into a pirate. A very ugly man pirate with bad teeth and a lazy tongue.

I don't know what grade I got on these yet. I may take them off of my blog is it's pretty bad...

I love when he comes up because I get a huge excuse to draw all day (I love when he comes up because he's my cousin too, and fun to boot). I messed around with a brush-tip pen to outline. I really like the lush thick lines it gave me. Still used a #02 for the facial details, though... I'm not that fearless yet.

I was told about these awesome, fun little collectable cards artists trade and sell called ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals) by my dear artsist friend, Gail.(-pokes link section- She paints on feathers! Go check out her wildlife art!) Basically, what they are, is fun little works of art at a smaller price then, say, a 11"x14" masterpeice. Just to clear that up. We are working our tailbones off so that we have sufficient funds, though. Pray for that. We need lots of prayer.

UPDATED: More enties. Sent the blasted thing in today via e-mail and the administrator said Bethany and I had a good chance at a scholarship? 100% grant? something along those lines if we started in June, and wrote a letter thing about why we chose the Academy of Art and what we plan to do with our futures. I'm really, really excited, but at the same time I wanted to go to Indiana this summer. If it's in God's will, it will all work out. If NOT well, I'll swing with it. That sounds really ungrateful, and it's not suppossed to. I guess I just can't quite grasp it all right now... Oh, yeah, I promised new entires. Here ya go!

Kay, kiddos. This is the sorry mess that is my college portfolio SO FAR. I still need, like, 11 more entries. And these are pretty sorry for a portfolio, but hey, it's the best I got. I know, I know! She's little loose lookin'... I'm sorry if your eyes are bleeding. She's my villain I've had in my head for 5 to 7 years. I lost count, but that's pretty irrelevant. She basically has the "Look, but you touch and I'll rip your hand off and feed it to you." attitude. Don't fret, the character mellows... this is just her at her most rebellious, evilness state. UGH I HATE THIS but it's all I have to show my "realistic portrait" stuff and it ain't much. Drew this back in... 05 or 03. I'll have to check the date again. Either way, dinosaurs still walked the earth. Christine Daae, in my cartoony style done on coral painter with my trusty tablet. Not too fond of this either. Whatever. I'm not fond of any of, really Done with Prismacolor markers... I would like this better if Christine (yeah, this is Christine Daae as a mom. Daae wouldn't be her last name, though) didn't look so kooky. She looks TOO animated if that were possible. Leave it to me to ruin something with over dramatics. Erik, the Phantom of the Opera in Pen&Ink! He looks like Michael Jackson! Still can't decide who's freakier. The Brotherhood of Mutants done "X-Men Evolution" style, in acrylic paint. I know I'll have a better, more realistic acrylic portrait in the portfolio. I'm not even sure why this is in here. Just a filler I guess. Today we have a guest artist: my mom! I am ashamed to admit it, but I was surprised by the quality of her painting... and she whipped it out in under 10 minutes... and on WAX PAPER, even! (technically, it's not wax paper, it's palette paper, but you get the idea. It's literally wax paper in a tablet) I just think this is great. She hasn't done anything like this in a long time and she still has it.

I've really neglected this place, so... after seeing some other people's really neat, uplifting, and inspiring blogs, I thought I'd get back to mine, and perhaps push some of the stuff from (two?) years ago to the back. Yeash, no longer a 'dump whatever' blog will this be...

So, if I don't get lazy again, and if this all goes as planned, this blog will be primarily an art blog, along with the reason/inspiration for the piece. You may even get illustrations with excerpts along with them! wont that be exciting? I can practically feel your excitement.

by "art" I mean mostly sketches or doodles... but I find they can be fun sometimes, and everyone likes a bit of fun now and again, right? Or course right.

Before I lose ambition, here is the first "new" art! YAY!

Okay, so these are the three main characters of an RPG (role-playing-game. Basically, what it is, is you write parts of a story from your own characters point of view. There usually is no plot, so, generally, you don't know what's going to happen next. It's sickeningly delightful.) between me and two very dear friends of mine. Trapsin Evente is mine, Javanna (Tenerin Mornen), and Black Star are my friend's (Rachel and Sarah's respectively).
Trapsin is a nobody, and Javanna and Black Star are deep in deep stuff. Trapsin pretty much invited himself into their problems without knowing it because he was too afraid of his own. Trapsin is so... very much a character. To me he is anyway. I don't even look at Trapsin as "MY CHARACTER" you know? he just sort of 'is' and I have the wonderful, delightful, privilege of writing for him.

Anyway, the reason behind these sketches... this was an original idea for a "graphic" for the front page of the Yahoo!Group that holds the RPG. The three main characters eyes and then a "bust" of each. I have since come up with another idea I like much more that, Lord willing, I will successfully tackle.

I think I just jinxed myself.
